Survey and Construction Departments

Before joining NCE, Kevin worked with NDOT's survey and construction departments on work ranging from field reconnaissance and topographic surveys to daily construction inspection reports verifying contractor work and progression.

Disciplines

Pavement condition assessment

Manual and semi-automated distress surveys carried out to standard — ASTM D5340 for airside pavements, ASTM D6433 for roads and landside. A distress survey is a structured, repeatable judgement about what a pavement is doing and why, recorded so that the same section can be compared honestly against itself a year later.

Coring, GPR and deflection testing

Pavement thickness cores, ground-penetrating radar and falling weight deflectometer testing establish what is actually under the surface and how the structure responds to load. Surface condition alone cannot distinguish a pavement that needs a thin overlay from one that needs reconstruction; this is the work that tells them apart.

Pavement management systems

Field data only matters once it is in the system an agency actually plans from — PAVER™ for airfields, StreetSaver® for local road networks. That means quality assurance on the data, establishing and maintaining sample units, and catching maintenance work that was done but never recorded.

Construction inspection and survey support

Daily inspection reporting to verify contractor work and progression, plus topographic survey and field reconnaissance — the groundwork Kevin started in at NDOT and still draws on.
